Name

Bar code fonts

Description

Bar codes are a popular form of automatic identification of documents, products, goods, parcels, etc. Among numerous various code systems, Code 128 and Code 39 are the most commonly applied.

The HDF offer includes the following kinds of bar codes available as TrueType fonts:

  • HDF Code 128
  • HDF Code 39
The HDF Code 128 and HDF Code 39 fonts can be used in all programs using system fonts, working under the Windows operating system.

Bar code types will allow you to complement document identification with the use of a bar code. For example you can add a bar code to an invoice, generate a warehouse document with a product list and many more.

Font installation only involves adding the font file to the operating system.

Manufacturer

HDF Polska

HDF 128

Example: inserting the Code 128 bar code into a MS Word document.
  • Using any typeface (Arial, Times New Roman etc.), type a sequence of characters (in a form required for code 128) in a MS Word document.
  • Highlight the typed sequence of characters and choose the HDF 128 font from the Format/Font menu or using the Font menu (then the font is presented as a bar code on the font list).
  • The typed sequence of characters is changed into code 128.

The most important information about code 128:

  • alphanumeric, one-dimensional code
  • high resolution code
  • allows to code ASCII characters (0-127)
  • can be scanned in any direction
  • there are no limits as to the code length
Code 128 is a carrier of data which describe various information important for managing the deliveries, documents and products. A distinctive feature of code 128 for the purposes of e.g. delivery chain management is the system of so called application identifiers (AI). Using an application identifier allows to encode logistic data in a bar code.

Code 128 is used e.g. in warehouses, logistics (transport packagings) and retail sale. The code can include: production date, expiry date, product dimensions, amount, serial number, information on the product type, etc. The code is also applied in the following areas:
  • returnable accounts
  • coupons
  • electronic serial identifiers
  • company internal applications
  • payment accounts

HDF Code 39

Application of HDF Code 39 font:

Example: inserting a bar code for the 123ABC sequence of characters into a MS Word document
  • Using any typeface (Arial, Times New Roman etc.) in a MS Word document, type the desired sequence of characters preceded and ended with a *: *123ABC*
  • Highlight the typed sequence of characters and choose the HDF Code 39 font from the Format/Font menu or using the Font menu (then the HDF Code 39 font is presented as a sequence of bar codes on the list).
  • The typed sequence of characters is changed into code 3 of 9.
*Attention!* If you want to use a space character in a coded sequence of characters, it should be replaced with an underbar character. For example, if you want to code the following sequence of characters: 123 ABC, you should type “123_ABC”, highlight the text and change the font into HDF Code 39.

The most important information about code 3 of 9:

  • alphanumeric, one-dimensional code
  • the possibility to code 43 alphanumeric characters (upper case letters A to Z, digits, special characters: -, ., space, $, /, +, %)
  • the * character is used as a start and stop symbol of the text to be coded
Code 3 of 9 is very popular and easy to use. It is distinguished by relatively low data density and can be read by most of the bar code scanners available on the market. The code is most commonly used in company internal logistics, automotive branch, metallurgical or chemical industry.
